MUFASA
Biography on Mufasa
Mufasa is the secondary tritagonist in Disney's The Lion King[9]. Mufasa is a large, powerful lion who is king of the Pride Lands in the beginning of the movie until his death (spoiler alert). Mufasa is Sarabi's mate, Simba's father and Scar's brother. For the time that Mufasa was in the movie, he offered words of wisdom and protected his son from danger. Mufasa shared the meaning of the Circle of Life with his son. Mufasa is a courageous leader but also shows a sense of humour. Especially when Zazu is joking about turning Scar into a throw rug.

Mufasa as God
Although Mufasa is alive for a very short period within the movie, he continues to be a strong presence for the rest of it from the grave. Mufasa on a number of occasions appears in the sky in a ray of sunlight or a storm cloud to give Simba advice. In the Book of Exodus, God appears to Moses in a burning bush to give him guidance to go back and save the Hebrews from the Pharaoh[5] . Just like Mufasa when he appears in the sky and talks to Simba about his path as King. Furthermore, it is commonly said in Christianity that God is within you "Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?" (Corinthians 3:16)[5]. This reference to God also connects with the parts of Lion King where Mufasa is said to live within the characters, in particular Simba. The first was when Rafiki brings Simba to the watering hole to see Mufasa, and he tells Simba: Rafiki: [after guiding Simba to a spot where he says will show him Mufasa] Look down there. Adult Simba: [looks into a pool of water] That's not my father. That's just my reflection. Rafiki: No, look harder. [touches the water, as it ripples Simba's reflection changes to that of his father] Rafiki: You see? He lives in you. [6] Moreover, this is also shown again in the second movie at Simba's daughter's "baptism" with the song "He lives in you" (view clip to the left). |
